Sea of Stars is an indie masterpiece. There is no question about it. There is not a doubt in my mind that it received those ratings because of the hard work and dedication of the development team who poured their souls into that game.
HOWEVER, how does one go about putting themselves in the conversation as the best indie RPG of the year?
One word: Research.
Think about it, how would you know what gamers want if you never ask them for feedback
through game trials, surveys, emails, and everything in between Let me give you a very specific example:

This is a very basic battle sequence that happens all throughout the video game, but it’s a very interesting layout as opposed to other RPGs that compete with Sea of Stars because those battle sequences happen instantaneously without any cutscene or stops in the action.
It just flows.
Now, if gamers tried this game mechanic and they found that it was too clunky for them, wouldn’t game developers try something different? What about the vibrancy in the layout of the land? The pixels and the movement of the characters on screen? All of those things would have changed if something was amiss and the only way that you’re able to find that out is through market research.
In my honest opinion, the best feedback that Sabotage Studio, the studio behind Sea of Stars, could have ever received was the feedback they received when they put the game as a demo. I don’t remember how many videos I watched just based on what people said about the game.
And the best part: It’s their honest review of the game so far.
With that kind of research data, game developers could be able to tailor their game to the best experience possible and Sabotage Studio did it.
But my question to you all is: who will be next to utilize this skill and rise through the ranks?
Let me know your thoughts!
